Seattle is a large cosmopolitan city with many smaller communities and historical neighborhoods, like Capitol Hill, Queen Anne, Ballard, Fremont, Greenlake and University districts. It has a young, vibrant vibe, yet feels laid back.

Seattle’s neighborhoods are quite spread out, so it was worth it for us to rent a car after flying into Seattle Tacoma airport. If you plan to just stay around the downtown area you can easily access the city via public transportation.

Whether you are planning for a short weekend getaway or a week long trip, take a look at this guide to help plan your itinerary.

What to know about seattle

  • Seattle is know for it’s rainy weather and it rains about half of the year. The weather is most reliably best in the Summer, Seattle’s peak travel season. It’s best to always pack a light rain jacket whenever you travel to Seattle. We were there during Fall and it never rained while we were there luckily.

  • If you want to stay away from the crowds, opt for the cold season to travel.

  • Structure your day by neighborhoods you will be visiting.

what to do

  • Pike place market - Explore Seattle’s most iconic public marketplace which sells everything from beautiful fresh flowers to fresh seafood and souvenirs

  • Check out the Seattle Public Library - One of our highlights was the public library located at the heart of downtown Seattle. It’s magnificent architecture, art and every corner with its own surprise will keep you and your toddler busy.

  • Discover the Elliott Bay Book Company - a full service, multilevel bookstore with frequent author events, cafe, and over 150,000 titles.

  • Olympic Sculpture Park - Feels like an outdoor museum right on the water with beautiful sculptures. Los of open picnic spaces, mini beach to toss rocks and an entire walking path right up against the water. It was a nice place to take our toddler on a stroll and take a nap in her stroller while we got some steps in.

  • Mount Rainier - If you have the time to do a 2 hour drive, make sure to check out the highest mountain in the state of Washing state.
