5 things to do in jeju during FALL

Jeju island is located in the southern part of South Korea and has a warm and more pleasant type of weather than the rest of the country. There are still four distinct seasons all year around making it an interesting place to explore and do various activities during different times of the year.

The best time to visit Jeju island is in autumn - Autumn on Jeju island starts from September to November and has a cool atmosphere with average temperatures between 20-25 degrees celsius. It is still warm during the day with sunny skies but the air is dry with more breeze.

Our last trip to Jeju was during the late summer time to the beginning of Autumn. With cooler temperatures during the autumn days we were able to do different activities with much more comfort. Here were some of our favorites!

  1. Pink Muhly

During the Fall months there are a number of pink muhly zones to be found around Jeju island. If you are planning to do a hike at the famous Saebyeol Oreum there is a pink muhly area near by at Saebil (새빌) - less than 2 minutes by car. They also have horses and animals that you could pet and a few restaurants with the view of the muhly.

2. Go Tangerine Picking

There are many places in Jeju where you can go tangerine picking, but Sumdo (숨도) has a beautiful location inside the Natural Stone art museum (서부작 박물관), only W2,000 kilo price and you can also eat an unlimited amount of tangerines while picking! So I would highly recommend you choose this place for the picking during your Jeju autumn itinerary.

Because of its location after tangerine picking you can enjoy the outdoor park/museum area and visit the Sumdo cafe. We highly recommend this cafe - it’s tranquil and relaxing nestled between nature with korean traditional style architecture around.

Inside the cafe there are expansive windows all around, you can see the hallasan mountain and they also have outdoor seating areas if needed.

After resting at the cafe, check out the beautiful hangaris, korean style homes and the park itself.

3. Saetbyeol Oreum

Jeju island is famous for its hills and the magnificent views you get from the top, and Saetbyeol Oreum is one of the hills that I recommend you to visit especially during the cool Fall season.

There is no entrance ticket and it is quite a popular spot for many other tourists so I recommend to visit early in the morning or during sunset also to avoid the heat.

Tips:

  • wear comfortable walking shoes! It’s quite a steep hike up.

  • there are restrooms below the hill near the parking space so make sure to use them prior to the hike.

  • even in the summer it can get very windy here, bring a light jacket.

4. Alpaca Farm - Dolchidol Ranch

One of our toddlers favorite was meeting these cute Alpacas. Located on the west side of the island in Aewol, Dolchidol Ranch is home to not just alpacas but sheep, ponies, goats, and chickens. Open daily from 10:00 am - 18:00 pm with last admission being 17:00 pm. There is a small entrance fee which includes a bucket of food for you to feed the alpacas.

After feeding the alpacas take a walk in the forest, spend time at the observatory cafe with panoramic vies and there is also a small patch of pink muhlys here too.

5. BUKCHON DOL HAREUBANG PARK/ ART MUSEUM

The main symbol of Jeju island, Dol Hareubang means “rock old grandfather” statues can be found all around the island. This art museum/park has put together a wide variety of the statues in different shapes and sizes and, in doing so, illuminates their aesthetic and scholarly importance to visitors as well as future generations. It felt more like a park and museum rather than a tourist attraction - somewhere children and adults could learn.

The whole outdoor spaces takes a good 20-30minutes to walk and explore. There were lots of little photo spots and areas where it was fun for the kids to play in.

The park has a promenade, traditional local garden with walking paths, sculptures, small art gallery, play structures and a tree house like library area which was perfect for the kids. The indoor tree house has a variety of books, bean bags and some toys. The best part is the view you get from inside the tree house.
